A familiar humpback whale appeared in Newport Beach today!
This beautiful and curious humpback in known to science as CRC-18305, otherwise called “Lorylaney”. Captain Ryan on the Newport Coastal Adventure zodiac was able to introduce people to this friendly whale on their second trip today! We have seen this Humpback every year since 2018 - easily identified thanks to the flawless, white flukes.
.
Humpback Whales scientific name Megaptera Novaengliae means 'Big Wings', which when seen from the air with our drone it's a fitting name! Humpback Whales have worldwide distribution, migrating between mid-to high latitude summer feeding grounds and low latitude breeding grounds (where they will mate & calve).
Females can reach lengths of 52ft & 70,000lbs! Their lifespan is at least 50 year, but probably nearer to 75 years. The oldest recorded Humpback Whale was 95 years old!
.
Whale Watching in Newport Beach at this time of the year in normally great, with Gray Whales, Dolphin and Fins Whales being sighted in the area. This Humpback Whale definitely stole the show giving our passengers aboard Newport Coastal Adventure a very personal and special experience they will not soon forget!
