This video is about Kull, a character created by Robert E. Howard, who also created Conan the Barbarian.
Kull was a more introspective character than Conan.
To show you what Kull looked like and the sort of adventures he was involved in, a chronological series of Marvel Comic Book Covers featuring Kull, from 1971 to 1978 are being presented.
Robert E. Howard was an American writer, who born in 1906 and died in 1936.
He wrote pulp fiction in a diverse range of genres and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre.
Kull of Atlantis or Kull the Conqueror made his first published appearance in a story titled “The Shadow Kingdom” in the August 1929 issue of Weird Tales.
The story starts shortly after Kull, a barbarian from Atlantis, has conquered Valusia and becomes its King.
Kull’s first appearance was before Conan’s.
A total of three Kull stories were published before Robert E. Howard’s death and later nine more stories and a poem, as described below.
"The Shadow Kingdom" (first published in Weird Tales, August 1929)
"The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune" (first published in Weird Tales, September 1929)
"Kings of the Night" (first published in Weird Tales, November 1930)
Howard also wrote nine other Kull stories, which were not published until much later:
"The Altar and the Scorpion" (first published in King Kull, 1967)
"The Black City" (first published in King Kull, 1967) Also known as "The Black Abyss".
"By This Axe, I Rule" (first published in King Kull, 1967) Re-written by Howard into the Conan story "The Phoenix on the Sword".
"The Curse of the Golden Skull" (first published in The Howard Collector #9, Spring 1967)

"Riders Beyond the Sunrise" (first published in Kull: The Fabulous Warrior King, 1978 although a version edited by Lin Carter was first published in King Kull, 1967) Originally untitled, title created by Lin Carter.
"The Skull of Silence" (first published in King Kull, 1967). Also known as "The Screaming Skull of Silence".
"The Striking of the Gong" (first published in the Second Book of Robert E. Howard, 1976 although a version edited by Lin Carter was first published in King Kull, 1967)
"Swords of the Purple Kingdom" (first published in King Kull, 1967)
"Wizard and Warrior" (first published in Kull: The Fabulous Warrior King, 1978 although a version edited by Lin Carter was first published in King Kull, 1967) Originally untitled, title created by Lin Carter.
Finally, Howard also wrote one Kull poem: "The King and the Oak"
Kull was born in pre-cataclysmic Atlantis 100,000 BC
He was a pirate between his late adolescence and his early twenties.
He then became an outlaw and then a gladiator. He then became a mercenary and then a leader of mercenaries.
By his early thirties he is involved in a revolt and becomes a King.
Once a King, he faces several internal and external challenges.
In the Conan the Barbarian story “Shadows of the Skull”, it is revealed that Conan is a direct descendant of Kull.
In 1997 there was a Kull the Conqueror movie with Kevin Sorbo as Kull and Tia Carrere as his female enemy.
That movie was originally intended to be the third Conan movie, Conan the Conqueror, but Arnold Schwarzenegger declined to play the role of Conan.
Kevin Sorbo was reluctant to redo a character already played, so the character was changed to Kull. Kull has been adapted to comics by Marvel Comics with three series between 1971 and 1985.
In 2006, Dark Horse Comics bought the rights to use Kull and subsequently published comics about him.
In the near future, do you want a new TV show or a new movie created about Kull?
What actor or actors would you like to have play the role of Kull?
