President Joe Biden vowed to break from Donald Trump’s Middle East agenda and to make Saudi Arabia the “pariah that they are.” But as he prepares to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, it looks like Biden is about to betray his own proclamations – with an offer to expand on Trump’s Abraham Accords initiative, and to help push Saudi Arabia toward recognizing Israel.
The Abraham Accords continues a long-standing effort to organize the region by sweeping the Israeli-Palestinian conflict under the rug and isolating Iran. Not surprisingly, it fails to bring about peace between Israelis and Palestinians. It bypasses that issue entirely and instead cements the conflict between Israel and some Arab monarchies on one side -- and Iran and its partners on the other.
If Biden walks away from the Iran nuclear deal, and instead embraces an arms-sales pact, he’ll sacrifice an agreement that would have prevented the spread of nuclear weapons for a deal that will flood the region with more weapons.
