Villagers of Nakachari Dohutia in Jorhat, Assam had an unlikely visitor in the form of a one-horned rhinoceros on Wednesday.
Locals first saw the rhino roaming a paddy field near the village in the morning. The rhino fell in a ditch at around 6 am, after which forest officials were alerted.
A 12-member team from Assam State Zoo, Guwahati, set out at around 9 am and reached the village, which is under Mariani, around 4 pm.
"To rescue the rhino, we set out from Guwahati around 9:40 am. We came here as fast as we could, driving at around 100-120 kmph. However, we were slowed down due bad condition of some roads. I do think we were a bit late in launching the efforts. However, these missions are always delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. But, our job is to see the mission through," said an official.
It has been learnt that the officials have not been able to rescue the rhino, which is believed to have suffered injuries during its ordeal earlier in the day. According to reports, the rhinoceros was first spotted inside the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in January this year.
