Stitches are placed during normal delivery for most first time woman delivery. This is mainly done for two reasons. First is if the baby is under distress, then we want to delivery the baby fast, then the cut is given so t hat he baby can be delivered fast. Second is when the doctor wants to use an instrumental delivery like t he forceps or a ventouse cup to fasten the delivery process, also cut is given. One more indication when a cut is required is when we feel at the time of delivery there is less place for the baby to come out and the tear may happen and that may involve the sphincter, that is the anal sphincter, then also w e give the cut, this cut is given into wall between the lower part and the anal opening. After the delivery of the baby, this is again put together and the stitches are give this is called as episiotomy and the suturing after episiotomy is done after the baby comes out. It is a fairly regular procedure and it takes 7 days to 10 days after delivery for the wound to heal. To heal fast, like any wound, you need to keep the wound clean by washing it every time after you pass urine , every time bowels is passed, you need to wash the wound and keep it healthy. Second is you can sit in a hot water tub for 20 to 30 minutes to help the healing process and keep the stitches also clean. Also you can put an ice pack over the stitches to reduces the swelling and this will help you in healing stitches like in 10 days.
