It’s April Fool’s Day! Did you know it’s also our favorite mischievous little penguin, Badtz-Maru’s birthday?! We’re going to celebrate him by creating a supercute reverse tie-dye look. Who else would tie-dye their shirts to remove color? Our BFF Badtz-Maru, of course! The best part about this craft, we are creating dye using everyday household items to achieve the look you want - stains and mess be gone!
Below you will find a list of materials needed, product purchase links, and detailed instructions on how to create your very own reverse tie-dye shirt! Here we go:
Caution: Bleach is involved, dress accordingly (old clothing is preferred) and make sure it stays away from your eyes! If needed, ask an adult for help.
Materials Needed
- Plastic Gloves
- Bleach
- Squeeze Bottle
- Tub for rinsing shirt or a sink
- Tray to protect your shirt
- Rubber bands
- Dark-colored shirt
Step-by-step Crafting:
(00:42) Step 1: Get your shirt completely wet

(01:01) Step 2: Pick where you want the center of your spiral to be
(01:04) Step 3: Pinch the shirt and start twisting. As you twist, try to make the creases even
(01:10) Step 4: Keep twisting until the shirt turns into a little ball
(01:15) Step 5: Wrap the shirt with three rubber bands
(01:18) Step 6: Put on your plastic gloves and get out your tray
(01:21) Step 7: Ask an adult for help here because you need to combine one-part bleach and one-part water in your squeeze bottle
(01:32) Step 8: Put on old clothes and make sure the bleach stays away from your face when you shake it up
(01:36) Step 9: Use your squeeze bottle to apply bleach all over your shirt
(01:54) Step 10: Let your shirt set for 10 minutes
(01:56) Step 11: Cut off the rubber bands and rinse the shirt thoroughly
(02:04) Step 12: Continue rinsing the shirt until the water is clear
(02:11) Step 13: Once you get all the bleach out, either hang the shirt up or put it into a dryer to dry
