Christie’s Senior Specialist, Eric Wind, gives an in-depth look at this Universal Genève Compax, Ref. 885103-02.
SPECIALIST NOTES: This Universal Genève Compax is known as the “Nina Rindt” because it was worn by the wife of the famous Formula One driver Jochen Rindt. Nina was seen and photographed numerous times wearing this style of Universal Genève Compax. This Compax has a “panda”dial (meaning it has white base with black registers) that is reminiscent of the panda version of the Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona. In addition, it features twisted lugs, round pushers, a black aluminum bezel with a “dot over 90” in the tachymeter (a similar “dot over 90” configuration is found on vintage OMEGA Speedmaster bezels), and the legendary Valjoux 72 movement (marked as the Universal Geneva caliber 85), which was also found in the early Rolex Daytonas. The watch also features an interesting engraving (“Our Best / The Cork”) on the case back. This is a rare opportunity to purchase what has become an iconic vintage chronograph.
