In today's video I go explore the tomb of Amir Timur, the Gūr-i Amīr or Guri Amir, the Tomb of the King. It's the mausoleum of Timur Lenk in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
This was supposed to be the resting place of Muhammad Sultan Mirza, Amir Timur's grandson. But Amir Timur died unexpectedly in 1405 and he could not be buried in Shahrisabz as planned, because the passes to the town were snowed in. This way, Timur Lenk was buried here in Samarkand, next to his sons, grandsons and his teacher and friend Sayyid Baraka.
In the early 1940's, the Soviet archeologists started to plan opening the tomb, but they faced difficulties as the people thought this would come with a curse. There is this inscription "When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble". Then there's a second one, that's allegedly just a legend... or is it?! More details in the video.
It's definitely one of the best places to visit in Samarkand. I had a great time here! Besides visiting the resting place of Amir Timur, Ulughbeg and many other important figures of the Timurid times, Guri Amir is also a great place to learn about history and enjoy the stunning Uzbek architecture in peace.
