The Cerrado is a huge ecosystem in Brazil, encompassing 25% of the country’s landscape. It is a wildlife-rich savannah where many freshwater springs are born. The region is also home to traditional communities who have been living in their ancestral lands for hundreds of years. But the agribusiness rush in the region is killing the ecosystem and threatening the lives and livelihoods of the communities who depend on a health savannah.
In the late 1970s, a large agricultural enterprise called Agronegócio Estrondo was established in the region, deforesting an area almost four times the size of New York City to make way for soya farming. And almost 20 years ago, the company started to expand into these communities’ lands, turning their lives into hell on Earth.
What is the cost of development in the region?
