How to Use an Old iMac as a Secondary / External Monitor. This video will show you the step by step process on how to use an old 2009-2014 Apple iMac as an external monitor for newer MacBooks, shown by the 2020 MacBook Air M1. This method utilises the Target Display mode built into these older iMacs, without the complicated Cmd F3 way of doing it.

Here’s the list of gear needed:
Primary computer with a USB-C output
iMac with a Mini DisplayPort / Thunderbolt 2
USB-C to Mini DisplayPort Cable

Setup used in this video:
2020 Macbook Air with the M1 chip running BigSur 11.1
A late 2009 iMac running MacOS Yosemite (10.10.5)

So the process of connecting these computers is extremely simple:
First, just make sure your laptop is open and unlocked, and the iMac can either be on the login screen or already unlocked
Connect the Mini DisplayPort jack to the iMac
Connect the USB-C jack to the MacBook
