National Diabetes Week Seminar – Understanding Diabetes Complications
The NDSS National Diabetes Week Seminar 'Understanding Diabetes Complications' was held on Saturday 16 July at the Adelaide Festival Centre in their Banquet Room which overlooked the beautiful River Torrens and Adelaide Oval.
After the opening speech by Diabetes SA's General Manager Fiona Benton, guests were introduced to Dr Matthew Worthley, a Cardiologist from the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Dr Worthley discussed the different types of cardiovascular disease, how people with diabetes have an increased risk of contracting heart disease and the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent it from occurring.
Dr Chris Rayner, a Gastroenterologist from the Royal Adelaide Hospital then spoke about how diabetes can affect the digestive system via stomach problems (gastroparesis), oesophageal problems (reflux) and small and large intestine problems (diarrhoea, constipation).
After Dr Rayner spoke, one of his research team members Dr Linda Watson (nee Mignone) spoke about her latest research into whey protein, the 'Whey to Go Study' at the University of Adelaide.
Then it was time for morning tea. During morning tea, guests were invited to enjoy some fresh fruit salad with low fat yoghurt and a very tasty vegetarian frittata with microgreens, which was very popular. Guests were also invited to have a look at the variety of stalls available out in the foyer from the Royal Society for the Blind, University of Adelaide, Heart Foundation, SA Continence Resource Centre, Flinders Vision and of course Diabetes SA. Diabetes SA's stall was well attended with guests having the opportunity to meet staff and collect relevant resources.
After morning tea Miriam Henke, a Psychologist, presented some very important information about diabetes and psychological wellbeing. Miriam discussed diabetes and grief, anxiety, depression, shame and guilt, the pressure of diabetes self-management and the support that is available to people living with diabetes and these issues.
Feedback from the 2016 National Diabetes Week Seminar was extremely positive with many guests mentioning that they are more aware of the seriousness of diabetes-related complications and how they can prevent them from occurring in the future.
