Toyota debuted the all-new, 5th-generation RAV4 at this year’s New York Auto Show. When you have a car capable of selling 400,000 units per year, you might be tempted to make subtle styling changes. But this new design is anything but subtle. An aggressive fascia more closely resembles Toyota’s 4Runner and Tacoma pickup than the Corolla or Yaris, and the protective plastic cladding, which fits in sections—rather than as a continuous line—around the wheel wells and along the side, delivers an even more capable-looking profile.
If reliability draws you to Toyotas, you’ll take comfort in the return of the brand’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. This powerplant pairs with a new 8-speed automatic transmission in gas-powered models, and an eCVT for maximum efficiency in hybrids.
And the RAV4 comes with one of three all-wheel-drive options, too. The familiar system is still available on lower trims, hybrids use Toyota’s all-wheel drive with intelligence, which electronically powers the rear wheels, and a new system featuring dynamic torque vectoring is available on higher trims.
Entune 3.0 is standard with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, and upgraded systems featuring Sirius XM Radio and navigation are available. You’ll also find 5 USB ports, a wireless charging pad and an 11-speaker JBL stereo on the options list.
But Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and now includes road-sign recognition and lane-tracing assist, which can follow either the painted lines on a road or the path of the car in front of you to keep the RAV4 on track.
