Half a million people were killed and many more jailed in Indonesia’s anti-Communist purges during the 1960s under the regime of then-president Sukarno. The regime blamed Indonesia's Communist Party for a coup attempt, and embarked on a campaign of mass arrests, torture, and killings.
President Joko Widodo has recently acknowledged the atrocities, but victims and human rights campaigners say that can only be a first step in confronting the country's past. It was one of 12 events in Indonesia's past that the president called "regrettable." He said the government would work to restore victims' rights, but did not go into specifics. He also fell short of pledging judicial action against the perpetrators.
