Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidenced based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder developed by Dr.s Patricia Resick, Candice Monson and Kathleen Chard. This treatment is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which states that emotions, thoughts and behaviors are correlated factors. Often after a traumatic event we begin to tell ourselves things that may not be reasonable or helpful. CPT focuses on recognizing and challenging these thoughts. For example, after a car crash a person may tell himself or herself, “all cars are dangerous.” The emotion connected to that statement is likely fear and/or anxiety. This anxiety and fear cause this individual to avoid getting in the car. CPT works by challenging the unhelpful thoughts created by a trauma.
