Recently I've been developing some training programs to help filmmakers improve their reel and create more cinematic-looking images. One of the things I emphasize most heavily is that it's NOT about the gear you use. Cameras, lenses, LUTs, plugins, etc. go at the bottom of the list of priorities.
To prove my point, I shot this quick clip of my dad last night with a Canon Rebel T5i (which costs LESS THAN $500 for the camera and lens) and ONE light (the lamp that was sitting on his desk). No crazy setups, no fancy cameras—not even an actor.
The thing is, what makes a film cinematic-looking is more about lighting, set design, hair/makeup, wardrobe, camera angles and movement, focal lengths etc. It's NOT about using the most expensive camera.
Filmmakers should focus more on developing their CRAFT, and less on buying GEAR. In the end, the camera is just a tool for carrying out the artist's vision.
