Improving quadriceps recruitment in an atrophied thigh after knee surgery.
What is NMES?
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is a technique used to induce a muscle contraction using electrical impulses. It was initially developed to help prevent muscle atrophy as a consequence of disuse or paralysis. Electrical stimulation is used to contract muscle fibers which helps strengthen them, reduce spasticity, improve range of motion and even functional capacity. It is also used to help restore lost muscle strength and can improve circulation. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation can also be used to help relax muscles and reduce pain.
What is BFR?
Blood flow restriction
Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a technique used by doctors and physical therapists to limit the amount of blood flow to a muscle or body part. It is usually accomplished by tying a wrap or a band around the limb, and is used to prevent pain and swelling during recovery from injury, to strengthen muscles, and to improve function and movement. BFR is also used to improve the effectiveness of exercise, as it allows for improved muscle gain with reduced amounts of traditional exercise.
