When Charles W. was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer, finding the most advanced treatment was critical.
“My particular kind of lung cancer only represents like 8 percent of the total number of lung cancers there are. And what makes this one so bad is it tends to metastasize if given any chance,” he says.
Fortunately for Charles, he was referred to UCLA — which had just begun its ViewRay program and was one of the first hospitals in the world to offer the state-of-the-art radiation treatment.
“ViewRay is a machine that incorporates an MRI with therapeutic radiation,” says Dr. Percy Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
For the first time, Dr. Lee says, “we can make adjustments in real-time for those things that we couldn’t see before.”
