About 15-20% of the patients who visit the doctor with liver cancer have a curative option which will either involve removing the tumour out with surgery or in some cases, liver transplantation. TACE (Transarterial Chemoembolisation) is a common procedure done for treating liver cancer.
Watch this video by Dr M C Uthappa, Director of Interventional Radiology, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru to know all about the TACE procedure.
In liver cancer, about 80% of the patients present late and then the only option is TACE and any patient with liver cancer who cannot have an operation can opt for TACE.
The procedure is very simple that just involves putting a very tiny catheter (a few millimeters) into the liver itself, in the artery which is supplying to the liver tumour and then delivering a very high dose of chemotherapy.
The advantage is very obvious, a normal chemotherapy, given for any cancer in the body will involve a lot of side effects as it is given to the whole body. Whereas in TACE, it is given directly into the tumour in the liver. So the procedure like TACE can be tolerated very well by the patient. The procedure is done by a local anaesthetic with some mild pain relief because there will be a little discomfort while doing the procedure.
There are a few preparations that the patient has to do like getting a recent blood test, a CT scan or MRI scan of the liver. Once the procedure is done, the patient is able to go home usually after 24 hours of the procedure.
