Pope John Paul II opened the Catholic world's Holy Week rites in
the Vatican City on Sunday (9/4) by celebrating Palm Sunday mass
in St Peter's Square and appealing to the young to commit
themselves to the defence of life. The Pope began the ceremony by
blessing palm and olive branches and leading the traditional Palm
Sunday procession. John Paul said: "With your constructive
enthusiasm you must build a barrier against the culture of death
and encourage the advance of a culture of life." The Pope urged
the young to respond with a "yes" to life. "Like the young people
who feted Christ in Jerusalem, you too must open your hearts to
the Redeemer, you must be his people, the people who say "yes" to
life."
