Official music video for "The Bonny Ship The Diamond", from the album "Out on the Ocean" (gammalthea 2022), performed live in concert by Quilty at Nyköpings Teater.
About the song:
The Scottish whaling ship "The Diamond" sailed to the Davis Strait between Greenland and Canada every year from 1812 to 1819. The whalers would be away for several months, so their women folk dressed in their best shawls to see them off. The sailors shouted that when they came back they would be so rich they would burn the whale oil lamps during the day as well as at night.
In 1819 The Diamond and the other ships named in this song were staying too late in the season and they were all caught and frozen in the early autumn ice. One by one the ships were crushed to splinters and the sailors had to escape onto the ice and they lived in tents made from the sails and burnt their ships' timbers for warmth. They suffered greatly, but after many months they were rescued and came home.
