A pair of kayakers off the coast of Ireland got the surprise of a lifetime when a large basking shark swam directly up to their boats on May 22.

Louise Barker says she and another woman, Becky Hatchett, were kayaking when they felt ‘a little bump’ and realized it was the shark. Barker posted the clip to Twitter, calling the shark a ‘stunning creature.’ As of May 25, it has more than 240,000 views.

Basking sharks are the second-largest type of shark on Earth, routinely reaching approx 25 ft in length as an adult. Basking sharks feed on plankton and, despite their imposing presence, pose virtually no threat to humans.
