This video was created after a 'mews jesses' IG post and the discussion (which I thought was great!) about bells and transmitters that followed. I wanted to do some clarifying for those that may have questions but don’t want to ask or are just curious about what all the crazy falconers are even talking about.
Equipment for falconry birds is an important component and the placement of the telemetry transmitter and bells must be done with safety of the hunting raptor in mind. There is a big difference in between placement of a leg mount, tail mount and backpack coupled with the type of raptor and the style of hunting or flying either disaster can strike or you have a successful hunt.
I will post a video of the mews jesses IG post as well. But first I need to turn the photos content into a video content. This video is still useful without the context of what prompted it.
I know a lot of falconers will get their feathers ruffled because they used leg mounts and will feel defensive. I use a leg mount on one of my birds out of necessity because she left no other options. However, as you can see I went the safest route possible. The loosely tied zip tie that creates a dangerous loop is not an option for my birds, I installed a proper version of the leg mount that is inexpensive and in my opinion, a whole lot simpler than zip ties every hunt. My Ferruginous Hawk didn’t tolerate the zip ties or the clippers either. So in the end it, this was safer for me too. 😉
Hope this makes sense and helps see some options! And share your own too! As falconers, we don’t, can't and shouldn’t learn in a vacuum!
Got questions about something in the video, just ask!
