The amount of plastic on beaches around the world could be underestimated by up to 80%.
Those are the findings of new research carried out on the remote Cocos Keeling Islands.
Despite their isolated position in the Indian Ocean, tonnes of plastic waste is washed up on the shores - often from thousands of miles away in Australia, Indonesia and beyond.
