A decade after ten Central and European countries took part in the broadest enlargements in history of the European Union and NATO, the eastern edge of those overlapping communities needs a strategy for ensuring the region's security -- a challenge dramatized in the past two months by Russia's seizure of Crimea and its backing for violent separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Amid the Ukraine crisis, the West should not need "any more wake-up calls to wake up," Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said today, in a discussion among Eastern European government ministers and specialists what that strategy should be. The forum was part of the Atlantic Council's two-day conference, "Toward a Europe Whole and Free."
