The Image: A stunningly accomplished scene - without dialogue or special effects or any 'action' - just the human face and available light. I wonder what Straub Huillet (would have] thought of this scene?
What we do have is a faltering, whispered monologue of only 36 words during the 'massive' span of just six and a half minutes (I counted the words as I typed the subtitles!) consisting almost entirely of monosyllables:
I'm cold.
The sun is cold.
The sea is black
As though language has been stripped down to just the most elemental signifiers.
I think there is something very Shakespearean about Almayer in this scene - a sort of mixture of Hamlet and King Lear..
Wonderful and beautiful... (Don't know if that is Conrad or Akerman though! - I like to think it is the latter!)
Almayer's daughter, Nina ('The love and true meaning of [his] life') has finally left to be with her lover, Dain ('Endless words of love, but actions - never" says Nina to her father as she leaves) leaving him entirely alone... (Apart from faithful retainer, Chen I suppose who loves him in a way]
I love the stillness and silence of the standing servant (Chen) behind Almayer - wonderful - somehow segues into the world of the infinite.
('They also serve that only stand and wait')
[Also known as 'La Folie Almayer']
(Chantal Akerman looked like this: [ Ссылка ])
