Join us in a conversation between Lynell George, author of A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky: The World of Octavia E. Butler, and City Librarian John F. Szabo about her new book and the award-winning science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler and the lab's namesake.

Lynell George is a journalist and essayist. After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame was her first book of essays and photography, exploring the city where she grew up. As a staff writer for both the Los Angeles Times and L.A. Weekly, she focused on social issues, human behavior, visual arts, music, and literature. She taught journalism at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, in 2013 was named a USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow, and in 2017 received the Huntington Library’s Alan Jutzi Fellowship for her studies of California writer Octavia E. Butler. A contributing arts-and-culture columnist for KCET | Artbound.

John F. Szabo is the City Librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library, which serves more than four million people—the largest and most diverse urban population of any library in the nation. He oversees the Central Library, 72 branches, and the Library’s $205.3 million budget. The library has received the nation’s highest honor for library service, the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, for its success in meeting the needs of Angelenos and providing a level of social, educational, and cultural services unmatched by any other public institution in the city.
