Both are traditional English carols.
Piano arrangement by Mark Hayes.
I have played the Coventry Carol for many years and did not realize, until looking for the lyrics of the song for this video, that the carol is about the massacre of the innocents in Bethlehem by King Herod following the birth of Jesus. It is a horrifying story.
I wanted to compare this story with present-day abortion, but they are not the same; and personally I haven't been in a situation to consider abortion as an alternative, so this is a difficult decision that I cannot understand. I feel great sympathy for any woman who is facing a situation that might end in the choice to abort a child; I can't judge anyone and the decisions they have made. That being said, however, I would like to raise my one small voice in support of the innocents who are being killed in my generation.
THE COVENTRY CAROL
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
Thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay?"
Herod the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay.
That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay."
THE FIRST NOWELL
The first noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Chorus:
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
And by the light of that same star,
Three wise men came from country far;
To seek for a king was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.
This star drew nigh to the northwest,
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Then entered in those wise men three,
Full reverently upon the knee,
And offered there, in His presence,
Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.
