In this video, Dr. Parsa Zadeh explains what a CT (computerized axial tomography) scan is and how there is a common misconception with individuals thinking this is the common machine used in dentistry. In fact, the machines that are used to take X ray images are typically cone beam ct scans or CBCT for short.The difference between the two is by how much radiation it puts out. A dental cone beam ct uses technology which radiates the patient much less but it also provides less data than a regular medical CT scan. Although cone beam machines differ in the way they section, the way they expose the patient and how much data they provide, both a CBCT and a CT shows more or less the same thing. The end result when using a CBCT is to get a 3 dimensional radiograph of the patient. This will in turn show you how deep the bone is and provides a huge benefit as it is imperative to know as an implant dentist of how much bone depth you have to work with.
