This scene from Stranger Things is a metaphor for life. From the importance of friendship to never giving up, this will move you emotionally and is paired with the perfect song, Running Up That Hill!
I just watched Stranger Things Season Four, Chapter Four, the final scene where Max escapes from the evil demon Vecna to the epic tune of Running Up That Hill, and I knew I had to make this video. This scene is epic and I noticed incredible mindset metaphors that I’m going to break down for you guys along with the footage from Netflix.
Go beyond the surface and analyze the deeper meaning of the song, the scene and how it relates to life.
Max is in the upside-down, alternate reality world that is controlled by the evil demon Vecna. It’s a scary, horrific and nightmarish place but it exists in her mind only. Nobody else can see it, nobody else can feel it. This is the first metaphor and it represents negative self talk that exists in our minds. As humans, we are our own biggest critics and if you’re mindful you will notice that your thoughts can be very self critical, negative and damaging. This is a space that only you can feel, it’s your reality created by your thoughts and that’s why Max is in there alone. Check it out.
Notice the friends Max has with her in the scene. They are frantically trying to help her and this is the second metaphor that is hugely important in life. The people you hang out with the most will determine how successful you will be in life more than any other factor. Max’s friends have a can’t lose attitude, and they do whatever it takes to save her. In this case, they’re trying to play her favorite song Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush because that song seems to be a way out of the darkness for Max. Imagine if her circle of friends really didn’t care about her, and didn’t have that compassion. Max’s fate would be very different, and that’s exactly what happens to people in real life. Let’s see what happens next.
Max comes face to face with the demonic Vecna, and unable to escape she is tied up and constricted in a way that conveys hopelessness. Vecna represents the hardships of life – depression, loss, heartache, regret. The inescapable pains that life inevitably throws at you, the kind of pain that suffocates you and occupies your mind and makes you feel like there is no way out of the darkness – that’s Vecna and that’s the third metaphor in the scene. But just like real life when we may feel trapped in a bad place, there’s a turning point.
Max’s friends play her favorite song Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush that literally opens up a hole back to reality. The music is a path back to the light and out of the darkness. Still within Vecna’s death grip, Max even says the words “you’re not really here.” This is the fourth metaphor in life called a turning point, or a comeback. And for you or myself going through a hard time in life this is that space between the bottom and when we are starting to climb back up. What happens next is a montage where Max see’s the good in her life, her friends, she feels the good calling her back as the song (Running Up That Hill) is blaring and she has a choice to make. Run toward the light, or succumb to the darkness.
And then Max decides to fight and this is the fifth metaphor that represents the power of decision. Change happens in an instant, and it’s the precise moment when you decide that you will not tolerate any other outcome other than success. That’s how winning is done. Let’s watch the power of Max’s decision here.
Is that song perfect, or what? I literally got chills and emotional when I saw that scene for the first time because it was just so powerful and moving. The lyrics about running up that road, running up that hill as Max is running away from her demon and back to her friends is just epic. Check out the final clip here and pay attention to the words Max chooses to say.
“I’m still here.” Those intentional words signify a breakthrough, which is our sixth and final metaphor for life. Max had a very surreal experience that could have ended two ways, a breakdown or a breakthrough. Successful people have trained their minds through daily practice and habits to turn negative experiences into breakthroughs. And that’s exactly what this final scene is showing in a very poetic way. So when life injects pain into your body and mind, and blows up your plans, just remember that you have a choice. Either break-down or break-through. Max broke through and I believe you will too.
