This is Shri Hemant Kumar’s centenary year.
I shall always be grateful to his daughter Ranu Mukherjee (my classmate in college) who introduced me to him. That was 49 years ago. He opened up my path to playback singing by inviting me to sing with him on stage. Then I sang my first playback song with my idol Smt. Lata Mangeshkar, under Hemant da’s music direction. He introduced me to Shri Manna Dey with whom subsequently I traveled all over the world and sang for 18 years on stage.
I shall always be eternally grateful to him – a great singer, a versatile composer, and a wonderful human being.
