This video will teach you how to correctly care for and run-in your brand new Yamaha 4-Stroke outboard motor to ensure the longevity and legendary reliability that Yamaha are famous for.

The first thing we look at is a small intake hole infront of the gear box, it's a small plastic pipe that runs all the way to the guage. This intake works off water pressure and determines the approximate speed the boat is travelling. This small intake can sometimes get clogged with debris and your speed reading will be totally incorrect or non existent, so if this happens get some small wire, pressurized air, etc to clear the debris from the pipe.

The second part to care for is the trim sensor which tells the Yamaha gauges where the motor is trimmed to. This sensor can some times become encased or jammed in crystallized salt which will prevent the guage from getting a correct reading. If this happens get some Yamaha Silicone spray, remove the salt and lubricate.

Under the cowl of the motor, Yamaha has made it very simple and easy for the user to maintain. The only thing you are meant to touch is bright yellow. There are only 3 areas that are bright yellow; the Oil Checker, the Oil Filler/input, and the fuse boxes. Your Yamaha 4-Stroke should never use oil, if it does we recommend your take it to your Authorized Yamaha Dealer. There are 3 fuse boxes with a spare fuse in each. Typically the only reasons you will blow a fuse is if you have incorrectly jump started a motor or mucked around with a battery isolation switch, but in case it does happen the fuse boxes are easy to access and you will have a spare right there.

If you ever need to manually release your hydraulics, the easy to access switch can be activated with a flat head screw driver. This will unlock your hydraulics and you will be able to lift your motor up and rest it on a chock or similar.

Got a flat battery? No problem! Your Yamaha 4-Stroke will include a pullstart rope which you can attach to the flywheel at the top of the engine once you remove the top plating with a 10mm socket. Yamaha 4-Stroke engines are relatively easy to pull start.

After a big day out on the water it's a good idea to coat the inside of the engine with Yamaha Silicone Spray for an added layer of protection. NOTE: Some silicone sprays can harden rubber and cause other unwanted results, so only use Yamaha Silicone Spray to avoid reducing the life of your motor.
If you got a bit of salt water under your cowl(which can happen after a big day out), you can hose out your engine with fresh water and then coat it in spray. Be mindful of not spraying to much above the starter motor.

After you've washed your engine, give the hydraulic ram a spray with Yamaha Silicone Spray towards the top of the ram. Don't coat the entire piston as this can attract unwanted dust and dirt which can damage the seals. Just a small spray at the top(as that area of the piston is usually always exposed).

If you are going to travel for long distances, off-road, or you simply want to provide maximum care for your hydraulics, it's a good idea to support your hydraulics on Yamaha's RAM support which is an optional extra and is very easy to install.

The motor run-in:
The purpose of running in a motor is bedding in the rings and lapping the components that touch(primarily in the gear box) with oil.

Before you start driving:
The first thing to do is to warm up your motor once it's in the water while it's at the pontoon or resting on the shore. You will know it has warmed up once the water coming our of the telltale is warm.

The first hour:
Go less than 2000RPM, but under load. Vary the RPM every 5 minutes or so. Do not sit at the same RPM during the run-in perior.

The second hour:
Give the motor plenty of thrust, get the boat up on the plane. Again never stay on the same RPM for more than 5 minutes. Vary the RPM by adjusting the throttle up or down the rev range. Do not go easy on your motor! The worse thing you can do to your motor through it's life is to kill it with kindness! Don't be afraid to use the entire rev range of the motor.

After the first 2 hours:
You can start driving normally. It's still a good idea to avoid staying on the same RPM for more than 5 minutes. It's also recommended to avoid extended periods of low RPM(such as trawling, etc) until your 3rd or 4th hour.

Caring for your motor in this way and using this run-in procedure will ensure the longevity and reliability that you purchased your Yamaha for and will last the life of your boat.
