One morning, Vicki woke up feeling weakness on her left side; her left leg and arm felt limp, the left side of her face felt numb, and she began having difficulty with her speech and slurring her words. A trip to the emergency room revealed Vicki had an ischemic stroke. She and her husband, Steve, made the decision to relocate from their home in the Outer Banks to Richmond for intensive inpatient rehabilitation at Sheltering Arms Institute.
