Sweden was expected to formally join Nato on Thursday night, bringing to an end more than two centuries of military non-alignment and nearly two years of diplomatic manoeuvring.
The long road to accession, which began with the shock of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reached its conclusion when Hungary, the last hold-out, submitted its ratification and Ulf Kristersson, the Swedish prime minister, handed its papers to the US state department.
The country’s flag will be raised alongside those of the other 31 member states at Nato’s headquarters in Brussels on Monday.
