Sea Shanties like Shallow Brown from the West Indies and Caribbean are closely related to slave songs.
This version is a farewell lament, and is a pumping shanty.
Pumping shanties were work songs sung by sailors to support the laborious but rhythmic effort required to pump out the bilges on the commercial sailing ships of the day.
Shallow Brown Sea Shanty Lyrics:
Oh I'm going to leave her
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
Yes I'm going to leave her
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
Going to board me a whaler
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
Going to board me a whaler
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
Oh I'm going to leave her
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
Yes I'm going to leave her
Shallow, Oh Shallow Brown
