On December 31, San Francisco has seen one of its wettest days on record, as a winter storm brought flooding to California. More than 5 inches of rain has fallen in downtown San Francisco, setting a new daily record.
Many residents and business owners shared photos and videos of flooded storefronts, broken pipes and damaged walls caused by excessive rainfall.
Local authorities issued flood warnings for communities across the Bay Area. Flooding temporarily closes major Bay Area highway and prompts evacuation warnings in northern California neighborhoods.
A section of Highway 9 near Boulder Creek is fully closed due to a slide that has brought dirt and debris across lanes. Authorities were also working to rescue submerged vehicles from the highway after some had chosen to drive through the closures.
In addition, residents are urged to avoid the areas of 14th and Folsom streets as well as Marina Boulevard by Marina Green due to flooding. Residents should expect traffic delays, consider alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.
