SIXTY-FIVE YEAR OLD PASTRY SHOP RECEIVES FAMOUS FUND AWARD
Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop celebrates 65 years in Baltimore next week
Gioacchino Vaccaro, an immigrant from Palermo, Italy, established Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop in 1956. He brought recipes and knowledge to Baltimore and opened his family-owned business in Little Italy.
Today, his family continues to run the pastry shop providing authentic Italian desserts.
However, for Maria Vaccaro, one of the co-owners, things haven’t been the same over the last year. Her staff, which consisted of 75 employees before the pandemic, now stands at approximately 35 employees. With restrictions in place, Vaccaro’s was forced to suspend indoor service. Their sales are down 65% as a result.
Legendary Baltimore DJ, Kirk McEwen of the 98-Rock afternoon Kirk and Marianne Show, made the call to Ms. Vaccaro on behalf of the Famous Fund. During the call, she explained that she had just finished speaking to one of her employees of 30+ years who left in tears because he hasn’t been able to work like normal for the past year. Ms. Vaccaro was also unaware of why McEwen was calling. When he gave her the news that the Famous Fund was providing the business $7,500, she was overwhelmed. She then mentioned that she thought he was calling just to “check in on her”. It was Ms. Vaccaro’s daughter-in-law, Kelly Vaccaro, who has witnessed the struggles of the last year firsthand, who nominated the business for the Famous Fund.
Ms. Vaccaro shared that the business was celebrating it’s 65th anniversary on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 with 65 cent cannolis. They are hoping residents from the region come out and enjoy and support them as they continue to work to emerging out of the pandemic.
Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop is located at 222 Albemarle St, Baltimore, MD 21202.
