With the Super Bowl just the other day, I thought it'd be fun to look at another Super Bowl Champion, Bill Walsh, and his book, The Score Takes Care of Itself. amazon.com/Score-Takes-Care-Itself-Philosophy/dp/1591843472/
Bill Walsh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49’ers. In his second year as coach, his team lost 8 GAMES IN A ROW. He slumped down, depressed, and thought about quitting the next morning. Sixteen months later, the San Francisco 49er’s were Super Bowl Champions.
People would ask Bill Walsh, “Bill, when you became head coach of the 49ers, did you have a timetable for winning the Super Bowl?”
His Answer: NO.
His only timetable was to teach every person on the team what to do, and what to think. A timetable to focus his team on what he calls his STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE. Things like no shirttails out, positive attitude, be on time, and good sportsmanship.
This didn’t just apply to players. Maintenance workers, ticket takers, and parking lot attendants were all taught their own job’s standard of performance. He says, "This may seem trivial to you, but you have to remember: "Champions behave like champions before they’re champions."" He had faith that if they focused on doing the right things, the score would take care of itself.
This is a great lesson for leadership and LIFE: Concentrate on what will produce results rather than on the results. Concentrate on the process rather than the prize. Let the score take care of itself.
