National Tracheostomy Safety Project.
Do you know how to perform ventilation via a child's tracheostomy stoma? Even if the answer is yes, then you should check your understanding with this video. The short clip explains in a clear, step by step structure how and when this skill is needed. We provide clear instructions to demonstrate this essential skill to help manage paediatric tracheostomy emergency situations.
Our goal is to improve the safety and quality of care for patients with tracheostomies and laryngectomies through education. We’ve collaborated with key stakeholders in tracheostomy care and developed these freely accessible resources, supported by online learning developed with the Department of Health. We’ve worked with the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative since 2012 to improve care for patients and their families around the world.
The paediatric videos were filmed at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in 2018 during routine anaesthetics, ward care and during home visits. As with all of our videos, the staff, parents and patients were fully informed about the filming and have given their consent for the videos to be used by the National Tracheostomy Safety Project. The adult videos were filmed in 2017 at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. The children in our videos attended a special premiere in 2019 to thank them for their participation.
