(21 Aug 2015) 1ST RECORDING CONTRACT SIGNED BY THE BEATLES UP FOR AUCTION
Heritage Auctions plans to sell what's touted as the first recording contract signed by the Beatles.
The document is expected to sell for $150,000 (USD) at its Dallas-based auction.
"It's a very important career milestone for them, because it's their first professional recording. But the fact that the contract leads them on to Brian Epstein that it leads on to the recording contract with EMI makes it absolutely crucial to the story. We've placed an estimate of a $150,000 on the contract. We think it could do better than that given its significance," said Dean Harmeyer of Heritage Auctions.
It's part of the Uwe Blaschke (OO'-vay BLASH'-kee) Beatles Collection that Heritage Auctions plans to sell on Sept. 19 in New York City. A spokesman says buyers also will be able to bid online.
Blaschke's collection also includes original photos, documents, autographs and other memorabilia. The lot has more than 300 items, especially related to when the Beatles were in Hamburg, Germany, in the early 1960s.
The collection features a vintage snapshot of 17-year-old George Harrison modeling a leather jacket and an autographed copy of the group's first EMI single, "Love Me Do."
"It's just such an amazing piece -- this little snapshot. It was taken at the Bambi-Kino, which Beatles fans may know is where they stayed on their first visit to Hamburg. Photos of the group in this period are very very rare. This photo because of the subject matter, is just astounding," said Harmeyer.
