When we see aquarium fish in peoples homes or in aquarium stores, it's easy to assume that they have healthy populations in the wild. In some cases that couldn't be further from the truth as there are plenty of popular aquarium fish that are endangered or even extinct in the wild. In this video I will be going through 5 popular aquarium fish that are either endangered or close to extinction in the wild.

For our first endangered aquarium fish we will be heading to western Thailand as we have the red-tailed black shark. I have personally kept this species in an aquarium and they have the potential to be very aggressive but in the wild the red tail black shark is critically endangered due to the construction of dams and loss of habitat.
For our second species we will be making the short trip over to southern India as we have Denison's barb. This species has almost be punished because of it's beauty. the torpedo barb has been criminally overfished and overexploited for the aquarium trade but things are looking a bit better in the present day as there has been a crackdown on the capture of this species.
For our next endangered fish we will be heading over to Mexico as we have the tequila splitfin. This small livebearer is thought to be extinct in the wild but there are many individuals kept by aquarists. There are efforts to improve their natural habitat and eventually reintroduce them into the wild.
For our next species we will be heading over to the Banggai islands as we have the Banggai Cardinalfish. The Banggai cardinal fish is one of the most popular marine fish in the aquarium trade and because of this it has become endangered in the wild. The capture of this small marine species is very inhumane and often causes harm to the ecosystem.
For our final endangered fish we will be heading over to the coral triangle as we have the humphead wrasse. The humphead wrasse is one of the largest reef fish in the world and is also one of the most endangered reef fish. The humphead wrasse is fished for both it's meat and for the aquarium trade. As the humphead wrasse is such an iconic fish there are many conservation efforts to save it.
Do you know any more endangered aquarium fish?
