Phillip Sear plays an arrangement by the Ukrainian composer Arthur Polonsky of a song by his fellow Ukrainian, Oscar Feltsman (1921-2013).
---------------------------------------------------------
Feltsman was born in Odessa, son of a Lithuanian-Jewish orthopaedic surgeon. He studied at the Pyotr Stolyarsky Music School in Odesa, and later at the Moscow Conservatory. He made his career in various parts of the Soviet Union, writing music for operettas and variety shows. In 1994, he wrote a song-cycle to celebrate the bicentenary of the founding of the city of Odessa by a decree of Catherine the Great. I should mention that in the titles of the piece, a credit seems to be given to the French actor Gérard Philipe (1922-59), presumably as lyricist.
The arranger, Arthur Polonsky (1899-1989), studied composition under Gliere at the Kyiv Conservatory, and joined the Red Army when it entered Kyiv in 1919. Having been involved in military musical activities, he was demobbed in 1922, and played piano in the Karl Marx Garden in Rostov-on-Don. After a spell as a cinema pianist in Kyiv he moved to Moscow, where he established a career as a jazz musician and arranger, and latterly as a record producer and music editor. He is best known for a piece called 'Blooming May'.
