Unlike other countries, Tinder was not that popular in Korea, when it launched back in 2015. Then the company changed their strategy, they transformed Tinder into a social discovery app instead of just a dating app. Tinder required users to write various interests to create their profiles, and matched other users with common interests. That is how Tinder began to gain interest from Korean people and became the most common dating app in Korea. These days Tinder is not just the most popular dating app in Korea, but it is also a popular way of finding new friends.
Of course, Tinder also has some bad sides too. There are unusually many fake accounts on Tinder in Korea. Some people don’t want to reveal their identity or photos on their profile, so they use other people's photos. It sounds a little weird. Haha
2. 아만다(Amanda)
“아만다” sounds like an English name, but it is actually an abbreviation of 아무나 만나지 않는다, which means “not meeting any random one”. Like the name of this app, not anyone can “sign up” easily. What does it mean? Let me explain! New users have to pass a strict screening process by submitting his or her photos and personal information like age, occupation, which university you attended. They must gain a score of 3.0 out of 5 to sign up. LOL. The company said that they use this screening method to increase the reliability of the dating app.

MEEFF has Korean users looking for international friends. It has over 4 million users signed up across 190 countries. If you want to do cultural exchange with Korean friends, or if you want to make Korean friends during your studies and travels in Korea MEEFF can be a great option to consider. Although this app is originally marketed as a way to meet friends, people are also looking for romantic relationships as well. 4. Bumble
Bumble was created by a former Tinder founder, it is known as a women-friendly app. At Bumble, women make the first move. In heterosexual matches, the woman has 24 hours to make the first move and the man has 24 hours to respond. So this app is safe for women and perfect for women who want to take control. In same-sex matches, either person has 24 hours to make the first move, while the other individual has 24 hours to respond, or else, the connection expires. Bumble also provides Bumble BFF, which is a great way to make new friends when you’re looking to expand your circle.
5. 정오의 데이트(Noondate)
Just like its name suggests, Noondate introduces two people every day at noon and 8PM in your location. You can check the photos and brief information of these two people. If you like one of them you can select one. If that person likes you back, it’s a match. Noondate also provides a web version, so it is easy to access. Each user needs Facebook authentication to join Noondate, and he or she is carefully reviewed based on their personal profile before they receive matches. If you put in detailed information, the matching algorithm will suggest a better match for you. Noon Date supports English, so for those who are not fluent in Korean this would be a great app for you. Yay!
