Like the airlock chamber on spacecrafts, a networking DMZ keeps sensitive data safe from the outside world. A networking DMZ sits between the internet and a company’s private network, managing access and the flow of traffic. Learn more about what a DMZ does and how it works.
A DMZ -- or demilitarized zone -- refers to a buffer zone that adds security to other areas. In the military, this means something like the strip of land between North and South Korea. In space travel, it’s like the air chamber that enables astronauts to safely go in and out of space crafts. And in networking, it’s a physical or logical subnet that uses firewalls to limit access to private company networks.
With a DMZ, users within an organization can still share and access content on the public internet, and authorized users outside of a network can still access relevant data from the network. But, since a DMZ controls both external and internal traffic flow to and from a private network, there’s less possibility of hackers directly accessing company systems.
