Residents in Charlotte's "tent city" must be evacuated because rats have taken over the place. It's a unique threat that creates a real public health threat.
Simply put, researchers say rodents can spread up to 35 kinds of disease to humans through direct and indirect contact. Homeless camps in Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco have all encountered similar infestations. In L.A., one camp was overrun with typhus, a rare infection nowadays that can cause headaches, fever, and in severe cases, death.
Rats were also behind the infamous bubonic plague, which killed a third of the world's population in the 1300s. Times have changed, but rats have not. They're attracted by food and trash, making tent city an easy target for the rodents. #WakeUpCLT #CLTNews
