Around two thousand womenfolk ventured out of their homes to stage a torch rally at Kakching Keithel tonight calling for the return of peace in Manipur.

The torch rally was organised by the All Kakching Clubs Co-ordinating Committee (AKCCC) and the rally goers initially gathered at Ibudhou Naohal-lai Laibung, Kakching Keithel.

The protestors raised many slogans including "Bring peace in Manipur", "Territorial integrity of Manipur cannot be compromised", "Enforce NRC in Manipur", "Root out Kuki narco-terrorists" and "Long live Manipur" among others.

The demonstrators also formed a human chain on either side of the road stretching around 1 km with torches/candles in their hands.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Rajya Sabha, in his first remarks in many months on Manipur, that many steps have been taken to improve the situation in the state and efforts are still being made to restore full normalcy. He had for long evaded any mention of Manipur.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, reached Manipur on Monday to visit three relief camps and interact with people displaced by the ethnic violence between the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zos, which began on May 3 last year.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya hit back at Ramesh and accused Rahul Gandhi of indulging in "sick tragedy tourism". He alleged that the violence in Manipur was the Congress's legacy.
