There is something magnificent about a huge SUV like Nissan’s Patrol.
As newer models become more and more fuel efficient, 5.6L V8’s are becoming as rare, and a recent rise to $2.30 for petrol means your 140L tank costs around $322aud to fill.
Nissan Patrol got an overhaul a few years ago, and a minor one very recently, not that you’d notice the latter.
The front end’s imposing grille looks like it means business. Like the main opposition, Toyota’s all-new Landcruiser 300, Patrol is designed as a go-anywhere SUV capable of towing big loads.
When loading up for the annual road trip, there are many considerations, not the least being weight. Patrol weighs 2715kg, with a GVM of 3500kg. there is 750kg of load, and a towing capacity of 3500kg for a GCM of 7000kg.
Think of other road users when preparing, as an overloaded trailer can be dire.
Inside:
There is a touch of Gent’s club, with wood and leather, combined with durable and long-lasting manufacture.
The Ti has 8 seats while the Ti-L gets 7.
Access, with 273mm of ground clearance, needs the side steps especially for the height-challenged.
There are 4 cup, and 8 bottle holders. 2nd row occupants feel limo-like in their spacious digs, but those in the 3rd row are a little cosier.
The cabin is quiet on almost all surfaces, even on dirt tracks.
Instruments and switches are a little old fashioned without the benefit of the updated left-hand-drive interior console and driver’s display.
There is no digital dash or HUD, and a tiny MFD lcd sans digital speedo. Also on the list of omissions are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and DAB+ radio.
It is worth keeping in mind that Nissan Patrol is up to 50k cheaper than the Toyota to offset any conerns.
