This video takes viewers through the Resisted Chambered Side Kick Drill, a drill that uses the power of the Kbands to add control, force, and balance to one of the fundamental kicks of Muay Thai. Martial artists can add this drill to the beginning, middle or end of any Muay Thai training session, since it can be completed in just a few minutes and requires no equipment except a pair of Kbands resistance training bands for each participant.
To execute the Chambered Side Kick Drill, athletes will warm up, stretch, then attach the straps of the Kbands around the upper legs. Then they can clip the resistance bands to the straps and find an area of the floor where they have plenty of room to maneuver to the left and right.
The Chambered Side Kick begins with the athlete adopting a straddle stance, in which the feet are separated and planted with the body perpendicular to the target. The knees will bend and the center of gravity will lower slightly. The rear leg will come forward and the foot will plant behind the front leg, and then the front foot will rise from the ground. The knee will bend tightly toward the chest and the eyes will focus on the target.
As the kick is released, the knee will straighten and the heel will move toward the target will force. Since the resistance of the bands will tend to push the athlete to the left or the right, participants will need to work hard to stay centered and balanced throughout the entire move. This will contribute to proper technique and will help athletes develop condition and strength in the core. This drill should be completed ten times on each side.
