Women earn less than men. For the only reason that they are women.
The gender pay gap is not a myth, it’s the consequence of deeply rooted sexism and discrimination that leads to women earning on average 14,8% less per hour of work than men. And when comes the time to retire, it gets even worse: women receive 40% less in pension than men.
Discriminatory contracts, part-time and low paid jobs, lack of promotions, maternity leave, the glass ceiling, ... all of these participate in widening the gap. It’s not always illegal, but it surely is immoral and unfair.
Things are getting better but at this pace, it would take about 80 years to close the gender pay gap. That’s why we demand bolder action from the European Union to ensure greater transparency on salaries and gender-neutral job evaluations.
