Refugee Crisis
Hungary’s sent military vehicles to its borders after it passed a law that allows its army to deal with the refugees. Soldiers will now be able to use tear gas and rubber bullets on them. And Croatian police have fought with asylum seekers at Croatia’s border with Serbia. They were trying to enter a newly opened reception centre. Meanwhile, EU ministers are set to meet again on Tuesday to discuss mandatory refugee quotas. Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic oppose the quotas.
3.1M Iraqis Displaced
The International Organization for Migration says more than 3.1 million Iraqis have been displaced since the beginning of last year. It reports that since April 2015, 250 thousand people have been forced to leave Ramadi. ISIS captured the city in May. On Monday, the militant group bombed four locations around the capital Baghdad. It also launched rockets at the city’s airport. The attacks killed at least 17 people.
Investigating Volkswagen
South Korea announced it will launch an investigation into three Volkswagen diesel models after the company admitted it cheated so that some of its cars could pass emissions tests. The US Environmental Protection Agency discovered some models contain a device that allow them to release less pollution during tests than while driving normally. The carmaker faces penalties as high as 18 billion dollars in the US.
Man Posts His Shark Attack Online
A tiger shark bit a man while he was spearfishing off the coast in Hawaii. Braxton Rocha then swam to shore. He filmed his leg wound and posted it on social media before he was flown to a hospital for surgery. Rocha’s family says he’s in intensive care. Tiger sharks are considered among the three most dangerous sharks in the world.
