The Oyster Perpetual is one of Rolex’s most enduring and longest-produced models. It combines two of Rolex’s most innovative features into one straightforward watch, the waterproof Oyster case and the Perpetual movement.
The Oyster case was developed in 1926, earning its name after its reliable, waterproof seal and round shape. With its invention came the world’s very first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch dubbed the Rolex Oyster. It was only the first of many Rolex innovations that would eventually shape the watch industry as we know it today.
A few years after the Oyster case was released, Rolex also invented the Perpetual movement with self-winding. This technology uses the movement of the wearer’s wrist to power itself. If the watch is strapped to the wrist, the movement does not need to be wound, hence its name “Perpetual.”
Today, the Rolex Perpetual movement has evolved in leaps and bounds, offering many functions, including date mechanisms and dual-time options. However, the Oyster Perpetual series keeps it simple with a time-only function featuring three hands to display hours, minutes, and seconds and without any additional mechanisms.
This modest design set has since made the Oyster Perpetual the quintessential entry-level Rolex. It is also the foundation upon which most other Rolex watches are built, as nearly every modern Rolex watch utilizes both the waterproof Oyster case and Perpetual movement.
FEATURES
The Oyster Perpetual is available in various case sizes and dial colors to suit nearly any wrist. Traditionally, the series has always maintained a modest design set. However, for 2020 Rolex released a collection of nine vibrant dial color options, including gorgeous Candy Pink, bright Yellow, and even Coral Red.
The collection also saw the 39mm case size discontinuation in favor of the more contemporary 41mm option. Additionally, the 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetual received the brand-new cal. 3230 movement, complete with a longer 70-hour power reserve and anti-shock and anti-magnetic technology.
As of 2021, the Oyster Perpetual is only available in 904L-grade Oystersteel, Rolex’s proprietary stainless steel finish. The collection is also currently only produced on the three-link Oyster bracelet. However, there are other metal finish and bracelet options currently available on the secondary market.
HOW TO USE THE OYSTER PERPETUAL
Finally, we will teach you how to use the Oyster Perpetual. As we already mentioned above, the OP is one of Rolex’s most straightforward watches and is, therefore, relatively easy to use.
Step 1: Unscrew the winding crown until you hear a faint “click.”
Step 2: Rotate the crown in either direction to set the time.
Step 3: After setting the time, push the winding crown and screw it back down into the case. This step is very important. If the crown is not properly screwed into the case, it is no longer waterproof, and the movement might become damaged by moisture or dust.
That’s it! You are ready to enjoy your Oyster Perpetual.
No matter where your day takes you or what your budget is, we’re confident that there is an Oyster Perpetual to suit your wrist. It’s also an excellent option to consider if you’re shopping for an introductory Rolex as it boasts the exclusivity of the Rolex brand without commanding a top-tier price. The Oyster Perpetual is also built to last a lifetime and will be a cherished part of your watch box.
